Dukes, Tribe Have CAA Players Of The Week

RICHMOND, Va.-- CAA Football announced its Player of the Week honorees, Monday, Nov. 2.  Four individuals earned honors after showcasing superb efforts in contests played in Week Nine of the 2009 season, including James Madison’s Justin Thorpe and Chase Williams, Maine’s Donte Dennis and William and Mary’s David Miller.

CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Justin Thorpe, QB, James Madison

Thorpe earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading James Madison to a 20-8 win on the road over No. 16 Delaware.  The redshirt freshman quarterback garnered 304 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in the Dukes’ first conference victory of the season.  Thorpe, a Richmond, Va., native completed 11-of-15 passes for a career-high 262 yards and touchdown and rushed 11 times for 42 yards including a 12-yard touchdown.  Thorpe and JMU’s offense compiled 229 yards through the air in the second half, helping it outscore the Blue Hens 20-5 over the game’s final 30 minutes.

CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week - Donte Dennis, LB, Maine

Dennis, the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, led Maine to a 19-9 win over No. 19 Massachusetts in Orono, Maine, Saturday.  The sophomore linebacker contributed 11 tackles and one tackle for a loss of three to the Black Bears’ defensive effort against the Minutemen.  The Rahway, N.J., native also broke up two passes, recovered a fumble and hauled in two of the four interceptions forced by Maine on the day.  Dennis’ first interception on the day took place around midfield with just three minutes to play in the first half.  The Black Bears took advantage of the first of its six forced turnovers by marching the ball 46 yards for a touchdown which proved to be Maine’s game-winner.

CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week - David Miller, P, William and Mary

Miller, the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week, averaged 48.7 yards a punt on six attempts in William and Mary’s 39-14 win at Rhode Island.  The junior placed three of his six punts inside the 20 and two inside the 10.  The Centreville, Va., native also booted a career-best 71-yard punt in the fourth quarter against the Rams.  The 2008 CAA Football All-Conference Third Team punter leads the league and ranks fourth nationally with a 44.7 yard/punt average.

CAA Football Rookie of the Week - Chase Williams, LB, James Madison

Williams earned Rookie of the Week honors after helping James Madison to a 20-8 win on the road over No. 16 Delaware.  Williams, a Gaithersburg, Md., native was part of a defensive unit which held the Blue Hens’ offense to a season-low 224 yards of total offense, including just nine rushing yards.  Williams, who was starting in place of an injured Jamie Veney, recorded a team-high 11 tackles and also took part in 1.5 of Madison’s eight sacks on the day.
