With the way this game ended you'll have to excuse me if my head is still spinning. I am not sure where to begin recapping this one.

I wish I could shed more light on the Alex Ovechkin injury, which occurred in the second period. After a seemingly innocent collision with Raffi Torres the Great Eight skated uncomfortably to his own bench and with a wave of his hand he was done for the night. Alex has been amazingly durable in his first five years in the NHL. We all hope he'll recover in time for Wednesday in New Jersey.

Now back to the game, where the Caps finally managed to solve Columbus goalie Steve Mason. Mason was good today, not great like he was last year when he blanked the Caps twice. I thought both goalies were on good behavior through two periods. Jose Theodore appeared much sharper today then he was against the Islanders Friday. But then the two netminders sprung a leak in the third peiod.

Brooks Laich converted two goals in just over two minutes, and with nine minutes left in the game you figured things would be under control from there. In reality the fun was just starting. Blue Jackets forward Raffi Torres is a tough cover around the net and he got loose near the goal to tie the score at 3, and again at 4.

Crease coverage continued to be a sore spot for the Caps. Once the game drifted into overtime and the home team was short handed, R.J. Umberger found room at the front of the net, unguarded, and steered home the game winner.

The two prettiest goals of the night were the first two of the game. Nick Backstrom finished off a beautiful combination passing play to give DC the lead. Then Rick Nash responded in the second period with an individual effort that showed off his speed, his size, and his creativity.

Today was a crazy day. It's the end of a four games in six days stretch for the Caps, who could use some rest before visiting the Rock on Wednesday.

OVERLOOKED HERSHEY TALENT
Morrison,Steckel, Q. Laing, J. Schultz, Erskine and even Poti. (Guys with 00000000000's, no goals, assists , points, 4 of them no shots pathetic. Yet MATHEW PERREAULT in his first game from HERSHEY leads the team with 2 assists, 2 points, 2 shots on goal did i mention he didn't play any power play minutes. NUMBER 2 *** Tyler Sloan ---- another hershey man played on the same line as Perreault. Without the hershey line we get shut out. Didn't I say this morning why not bring more HERSHEY GUYS up when your getting lackluster contributions from so many on defense, and on 3rd and 4th lines. All you caps fans who think were fine without ALEX O. are wrong because we don't play defense and take stupid penalties. Niklas Backstrom very rarely takes bad penalties but when we need Alex Semin our 2nd best goal scorer to step up instead he takes 3{Penalities} and bad ones which resulted in 2 of N.J.D. goals , 6 penalty minutes 3 shots on goal and 2 penalties that cost us the game. And the nerve is he wants more money than Backsrom next year who is the glue to our team. Making some of the best passes of all time first 3 games had 3 assists in each one. Semin who is 2 years older than Backstrom still Has not grown up and is injury prone but somehow still thinks he deserves more money( Bite the bullet Semin and take what we offer or hit the road jack cause we got plenty of talent in hershey). I haven't missed a caps game since I was able to crawl while most of you caps fans just joined on the Ovechkin Bandwagon. The reason we are not fine without Ovechkin is because of stupid penalties, bad defense, and mediocer goaltending. Ovechkin fights every minute on the ice which gets us a lot of power plays, when is the last time you remember us having 1 Power Play- no one could tell me , although i am sure it was a Pittsburgh game.. WE NEED JOE B., CRAIG L., TARIK AL BASHIR AND THE REST OF THE CAPS MEDIA TO FIGHT FOR GUYS LIKE CARLSON AND ALZNER TO COME UP AND REPLACE OUR OLD WASHED UP DEFENSE- EXCEPT POTI AND GREEN, MORRISSON I WILL HOLD YOU TOO BECAUSE VAST IMPROVEMENT THIS YEAR. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR CARLSON AND ALZNER TO NOT REPLACE ANY OF THE OTHERS. If you don't believe me check their -'s and the biggest key HARDLY ANY PENALTIES. *** HIRE ME COMCAST I WILL ASK THE TOUGH ?'S. *** KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JOE B. AND CRAIG L. I GREW UP LISTENING TO YOU GUYS AND KORNHIESER AND WILBON GOT NOTHING ON YOU 2. JOE B. PLEASE RESPOND TO MY QUESTION REGARDING NO CARLSON OR ALZNER. THANKS, SEAN

WASHINGTON CAPITALS!!
i know that people are worried about Ovi and i am too but people needto stop worring about ow the team will do. Thwy are the WASHINGTON CAPITALS not the Alex Ovechkins (quote brooksy) and they are just as good of a team without him in my opinion. He may be the best player on the team according to the stats but he isnt the only one doing work to get more goals. Backstrom is assisting a lot of goas and he can assist Semin or Knuble or Brooksy or even Green who plays more offence then defense (no offence) just as easily as he can Ovi so we can win just as easily without Ovi as we can with him. this is also the time for players like Semin Brooksy and Knuble to really step up and show that they are superstars too.

Why hesitation to bring up John Carlson and Karl Alzner
One thing we know is the biggest plague to the caps is defense. Why did everyone not notice that when Alzner and Collins came up from hershey last year we were giving up 20-26 shots most games as opposed to 30-40. Not only that but they take less penalties. Its seems sinceless to not bring up John Carlson he already has a goal and 6 assists in ten games as a rookie. He and Alzner are both plus 6's through 10 games, most importantly tally up their penalty minutes Alzner-4 and Carlson-2, 6 total. Are you kidding me with all the dumb penalties we take what are we waiting for. It seemed that Boudreau wanted to keep alzner up last year but evidently Mcphee makes those decisions. This is a no brainer- Erskine has 16 penalty minutes in 7 games, Jurcina- struggles most of the time i think he has put more pucks in our net then the opposition in his career. When the caps finally wise up and bring up Alzner and Carlson up we will have one solid defender on each line , Poti being the leading one. I am not sure what is wrong with Green i always forgave his bad defensive play for his offensive contributions, he doesn't seem himself depressed in all post game shows. JOE we could have the next Scott Stevens or Kevin Hatcher playing for hershey and we won't even give these guys a chance and until we find one more star defender we won't win a cup. Morrison has played better this year but explain to me why Alzner is not playing in every game this year . This stats are there JOE B. take the 30 games alzner and the other 3 young defenders played and compare how many less shots we gave up, turnovers , giveaways , etc. It wasn't high scoring as before but defense wins championships unless Varly turns it on. BRING IT UP DURING A GAME on COMCAST with CRAIG and maybe someone will take the hint. Congrats on being national you and Lauglin are the best of all time.

Never Heard you yell like that..
Hey Joe great job on the game yesterday like always I just wanted to say in the 13-14 years you've been here i have NEVER heard you yell like you did when you said "LOOK OUTTTT!!" when it appeared that puck on the delayed penalty was heading for the net for anything. I was amused. I couldn't even imagine what was going on. Anyway keep up the good work and I hope you stay around for a long time.

Richards is to blame
It's the same shoulder that Richards damaged years ago. Bad injury. Very bad situation.

NJ game
That Backstrom combo goal was so sick, he's really going to have to step up for Ovie's absence. It was too bad we lost this one, you have to think that if Alex was there for the 3rd period it would have been a different story. On the season he has like a 10 /- rating, that's good for 2nd in the league.

Jose quit before game end
Maybe its just me but it looked like Theo gave up on this game when Knuble went to the box late in the third. On the tying goal he had a lackluster pushoff from left to right and when he noticed it didnt go in on the first wack he kind of tried to get there. On the game winner he didnt even attempt to go down or get over. He stood there while Umburger took two wacks to get it in. You were a golie, did it seem that way to you or am I seeing something I dont understand? beaulieudonald@capsfanatic.com

Alex
The more you watch the replays, the more you see Alex grabbing at his arm in the penalty box after that flare up with Chimera and Boll in front of the Columbus bench. He plays through lots of aches and pains. This could be an aggravation of an existing ailment that he's dealt with for a while.

My bad
Good morning guys, sorry about the Craig Anderson note. We were setting up a graphic on Ovechkin and Anderson potentially being 1st Star of the Month for October and I wanted to bring Anderson into the discussion for Team USA, not Canada.

Park Ridge, IL
I knew there was a good reason Craig Anderson wasn't being considered for the Canadian Olympic team.
