Seabass Selects: Week 9

up
folks! I can't believe we are already in Week 9. We had hoped to get to 7 games tonight, and made it to 6 (Paint Branch at Magruder is the only game we didn't get to). Our game of the week (Clarksburg and Damascus) lived up to the hype in every way possible, and that is always a good thing. After two weeks of rain, it was nice to stay dry tonight, although the muddy sidelines at Damascus claimed yet another pair of my dress shoes...how long until I learn my lesson and start wearing old sneakers?
Offensive Player of the Night:Drew Murphy - Quarterback - Quince Orchard
Murphy only threw the ball nine times Friday night, but when he did, very good things happened for the Cougars. Murphy is great at putting the ball exactly where it needs to be so that the explosive playmakers around him can maximize their skills. Drew completed 7 passes, three of which ended up as touchdowns as QO keeps on rolling.
Defensive Player of the Night:Matt Evans - Defensive Back - Bethesda-Chevy Chase
At 6-1, Evans is pretty big to play in the secondary, but that's where the senior made his most important plays Friday night. With Churchill leading in the 4th quarter, Evans batted away a perfectly thrown 4th-down pass that would have kept the Bulldogs offense on the field. He was also in coverage on Churchill's final offensive play of the night, again leading to an incompletion... one that sealed a huge upset for the Barons.
Fans of the Night:Damascus
What went down Friday night in Damascus is what high school football is all about. I was told they were expecting between 3,000 and 5,000 fans... and based on what I saw I think it was closer to 5,000. The Damascus band was great, the cheerleaders were on cue, and even the public address announcer was one of the best I've heard this fall. The folks in Damascus put on a show that I would compare to some of the great atmospheres I saw early in my career in the Southeast, where high school football is king.
