Seabass Selects: Week 5
Friday, October 2, 2009By Sebastian SalazarCSNwashington.comAfter shooting the games, Sebastian Salazar will let you know who impressed him the most every week with his Seabass Selects! What's up folks! A crazy night tonight as we hustled to make it to four games. I know I already did during the highlights, but I have to give a shout out to Walter Johnson. I graduated from WJ way back in 2001, and it was awesome and a bit surreal to be back there working a game. Wish the Wildcats could have picked up the 'W', but congrats to Poolesville for pulling the upset.
Offensive Player of the Night:Running Back - Matt Risk - Churchill
When we got to Churchill, the Bulldogs were clinging to a 30-22 lead. Churchill's defense gave the ball back to their offense deep in Bulldog territory and, with some help from quarterback Alex Kantor, Risk kept Northwest's offense off the field for the rest of the game (about 6 minutes). The other team can't score when they don't have the ball, and Risk picked up the first downs that kept the clock ticking, and kept Churchill undefeated.
Defensive Player of the Night:Defensive Back - Ben Hessles - Poolesville
Walter Johnson likes to chuck the pigskin, so there was a lot of pressure on the Poolesville secondary. The Wildcats moved the ball well throughout the third quarter, but one long WJ drive came to an end deep in Falcon territory thanks to Hessles. The senior came out of nowhere for an interception that ended a very promising march for the Wildcats. In a game that came down to the wire, that play helped earn Poolesville their first win of '09.
Fans of the Night:Walter Johnson
This one was close... you could give it to either Walter Johnson or Churchill, but I have to go with my alma mater. When we were at WJ in the third quarter, it was starting to rain pretty steadily, but nobody... and I mean NOBODY left their seats. The kids were loud and knew when to get rowdy (when Poolesville had the ball) so you gotta respect that.
