Bethesda, MD (January 28, 2009) – Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, the leader in local sports television, honors Black History Month with a programming lineup, presented by The DC Tobacco Free Families Campaign, featuring some of the most prominent sports figures from Washington, D.C. The network and its special guests explore the topics of cultural change in Washington, D.C., their personal hardships and how their successes have affected others.
Viewers will be treated to the following programming during Black History Month on Comcast SportsNet:
• John Thompson Reflections: Comcast SportsNet basketball analyst Ron Thompson walks down memory lane with his father, former Georgetown head coach John Thompson. The father and son explore topics such as segregation, the 1960’s riots and the growth and change of D.C.’s Shaw District over the past 40 years. Pieces from this extraordinary Washington, D.C., history lesson will air throughout the month during SportsNite at 6:30 and 10 p.m.
• Black History Month Roundtable Discussion Featuring John Thompson and Darryl Hill: Comcast SportsNet welcomes the Hall of Fame coach and college football pioneer, along with other special guests, to discuss issues regarding the past and current state of race relations and sports in our region.
• My Life 365: Alonzo Mourning: Upon his retirement from the game of basketball, Comcast SportsNet will go inside the life of Alonzo Mourning. This 30-minute all-access special hits the core of what makes former Georgetown great Alonzo Mourning a champion on and off the court - from his work at the Miami youth center, to his Red Carpet kickoff celebration, to his All Star Basketball Challenge.
• My Life 365: Art Monk: Comcast SportsNet was the only area network to spend seven straight days with Art Monk to film a documentary about the life of the Hall of Famer. Monk shares his perspective on the greatest moments from his career and his emotions leading up to the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Monk also speaks on other topics close to his heart including his Good Samaritan Foundation and his strong faith, which helped shaped the person he is today.
