Zimmerman Blog: End Of SeasonOctober 9, 2009, 11:32 am Like I have done since I got drafted, I work out in Tampa, FL at a training facility (Athlete’s Compound @ Saddlebrook) that my Agency arranges for myself and some other of their clients. It’s a great spot to train and get ready for Spring Training, so after enjoying the next few months it will be back to work come the New Year....I know we’re 4-5 months off, but in all honesty, I’m ecstatic about next year. I think the strides we made this year with our entire team attitude, the pitching staff, our defense – it will only get better next year. Maybe we add a bat here or there, extend Dunn’s contract (I know he’d love to finish his career in DC) and mix in a veteran or two pitching-wise and we will be in the thick of it come April 2010. Mark my words. In the meantime I wanted to say how much I appreciated all of your guys’ support for not only myself this season, but our entire organization. While I know it’s frustrating when we struggle, your continued support going forward is going to make it that much sweeter when we do make the Playoffs and push towards a World Series. We’re a young group but one that is constantly improving, constantly learning about ourselves and one that is definitely hungry to take the next step. With our management/front office situation solidified, some more maturation by a few guys and a roster tweak here and there – watch out for the Nats in 2010!!! Thanks again everyone, enjoy watching the MLB Postseason!!! -Zimm

Zimmerman Blog: The Art of HittingOctober 8, 2009, 10:14 am Sorry for the little break in between blogs – it’s been busy as the season winds down and trying to finish up strong. On the heels of my last blog talking about defense and how one can really improve their game via hard work, increased athleticism and learning hitters and positioning, I thought I’d spend some time discussing hitting. In today’s game, fans seem to get the most enjoyment out of a long home run or a crushed double – anything that starts in the batter’s box. While I fully believe offense is fun to watch (and you all know I’ve laid out what I think of defense) I will now discuss hitting... First off, I think the big thing when it comes to being productive at the dish is getting into a comfortable routine. Knowing how you’re going to prepare for a game – whether it be taking flips in the cage, hitting to the opposite field in BP, watching video on opposing pitchers – allows you for the best chance of success over the long haul. I like to take some hacks in the cage with Eck (Nats hitting coach Rick Eckstein) and then watch some video on the starting pitchers and relievers that the opposing team could use in that night’s game. Before I go further into hitting advice, I have to give a huge shout-out to Eck. He’s been unbelievable to work with all year and I truly believe he’s one of the big differences in our offensive turnaround this year. With him and his work ethic and knowledge of hitting mechanics, along with Dunner in the middle of our lineup – it’s been exciting. I can’t wait for next year as I’m fully confident we have a majority of the pieces in place to contend for 162 games next year. Back to hitting – have a routine. Watch video if you have access to it. Be prepared on who you’re facing before you hit the field. And ultimately once you step into the box it will be similar to being on defense, your natural instincts and abilities will take over. You can have the full confidence in yourself if you know deep down that you’ve put the most possible work behind the scenes as you can. Nothing beats a ball that you hit absolutely perfect for a lined double into the right-center gap... My favorite hitters to watch are some of the best in the game: Pujols, Mauer, Braun, Howard and others. Now it’s your turn to go do it!! -Zimm

Congratulations on the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger! It's great to see you recognized for your outstanding efforts in the field and at the plate. As a Nats fan I really enjoy watching you be a "human vacuum cleaner" at the hot corner and your power at the plate. Congrats on on the awards! Have a great offseason and I'm looking forward to seeing your glove and bat in action in 2010!

thank you
Mr. Zimmerman...I am a D.C. native. I was born and raised in D.C. and lived in the Anacostia section. I was an avid Senators Fan (still remain an avid Redskins and Capitals fan). Two big thrills of my life were to attend two Senators games in Griffith Stadium when I was a kid. Thanks for making baseball in D.C. real again, and thanks for helping me to keep young. It was great to see you in action, and best wishes for a good off season.

Thanks
We love what you bring to the team, both on and off the field. Here's hoping that there's a gold glove in your future this offseason.

Thank you
Ryan, thanks for keeping in touch with Nats fans via this blog during the season. I know this season was another difficult one overall, but you kept this Nats fan sane with your play at third and at the plate. The team's winning streak at the end of the season gives me a lot of hope for the future! Enjoy your offseason and your vacations, and good luck for 2010.

This season
While this season wasn't much unlike the last, it went by a lot faster and I think a lot of lessons were learned. Next season I plan on being able to scream from the rooftops in the postseason "I Love The Nationals!" without being hit with a brick followed by a shout of "Shut up! I'm tryin' to watch the Philthies win!"

good luck in 2010
You're right, it's not even funny how fast the season has gone by! Have fun on your vacations and stuff. Something funny, there's a guy who looks just like you who shops in a Walmart down here in Florida, it's a serious look-a-like!
